The rapid decline in Citi’s capitalization has Wall Street wondering if it will be the next casualty of the financial crisis. I think not - I think it is highly likely that the Treasury and the Fed will do whatever it takes to keep Citibank afloat. If there ever was a bank “too big to fail,” then Citi is as big as it gets.

While they are not flying the “Jolly Roger,” Somali pirates have been raiding ships along the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, stealing their cargo, ransoming crews, and attacking merchant shipping. Things have gotten so bad, merchant shipping in this region is almost grinding to a halt.Somali pirates struck again this week by seizing an Iranian cargo ship holding 30,000 tonnes of grain, as the world’s governments and navies pronounced themselves powerless against this new threat to global trade.

As it presently stands, the Novemeber 4th election resulted in 55 Democrats, 2 independents (Lieberman and Sanders who both caucus with Democrats - making an effective 57 Democrats), 40 Republicans, and 3 seats oustanding. The three outstanding seats are Coleman’s in Minnesota, Saxby-Chambliss’ in Georgia, and Stevens (the convict) in Alaska. By hook and because of a “crook” - it would appear that the Democrats may wind up with the 60 votes needed for a “filibuster proof Senate” before the 111th Congress is sworn in next January.
