If the “appeasement” shoe fits….

Washington, D.C. (rightcommentary.com): I am not much of a Bible person - however - there is one passage of the Bible I think is applicable in the current flap about the President’s remarks yesterday and Democrats taking umbrage. Proverbs 28:1 - The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, But the righteous are bold as a lion.

Marking Israel’s 60th anniversary, President George W. Bush on Thursday compared people seeking talks with Iran and radical Islamic groups to those who sought to appease Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

“Some seem to believe we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along,” Bush told Israeli lawmakers. “We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is - the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.”

You can watch the video of this passage below:

Democrats angrily called the comment a veiled shot at Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., who has advocated dialogue with Iran and Syria, and has supported the efforts of President Carter in dealing with Hamas.

Obama responded: “George Bush knows that I have never supported engagement with terrorists, and the President’s extraordinary politicization of foreign policy and the politics of fear do nothing to secure the American people or our stalwart ally Israel.”

Sen. Obama - believe it or not - the world doesn’t revolve around you… and the President’s remarks don’t necessarily point only to you. Most of our European allies favor discussions with State sponsors of terrorism and terrorist groups. Former President Carter met with Hamas over the explicit objection of the White House. And Speaker Pelosi went and conducted her own foreign policy track - different from that of the President - with Syria. I think Sen. Obama - you’re well within the confines of the Democrat Party in stating you want to end war through ingenious rhetoric. It should come as no surprise to you, however, that we Republicans have a different view. When speaking to the Israel’s government it seems like a logical place to bring up how capitulation to terrorism and tyranny has cost humanity. Clearly - they appreciate and understand the costs of appeasement.

Is Sen. Obama feeling umbrage because the President called him out on his appeasement policy position? If it is the correct policy - as Obama contends -then why the outrage? As Proverbs states, “The righteous are as bold as a lion.” Instead, he should have restated his claim proudly, with full righteousness. Instead, the whole Democrat party is whining like spoiled babies.

If this is how Obama is going to react to a mild jostling - I can’t wait to see what happens in the general election when he’s being relentlessly pounded by the 527 groups.

But the fact of the matter is, the President did not call out Sen. Obama… or President Carter… or Speaker Pelosi. All of whom have advocated appeasement policies of one type or another with terrorist organizations, and state sponsors of terrorism. However, his remarks apparently touched a nerve with all of them - prompting Sen. Biden to completely blow a gasket and start swearing yesterday in Congress, at the President.

… I guess another “quote” is appropriate here… It’s not the best movie in the world… Days of Thunder.

In the movie, the rookie driver “Cole” (played by Tom Cruise) gets jolted from a veteran driver. In response, Cole’s car starts swerving all over the track and almost flys out of control. His mentor, Harry Hogge (played by Robert Duval), begins to yell at him…

Hogge: “Cole, You’re all over the track!”

Cole: “He just SLAMMED me Harry!”

Hogge: “He didn’t slam you or bump you or hit you Cole. He rubbed you. And Rubbin’ is racin’.”

Sen. Obama, my advice to you - Rubbin’s racing. Don’t act so surprised. For the past seven months, you have stated you’d talk to Iran, supported Carter’s foray to talk to Hamas, and espoused the belief that somehow war can be avoided through reasoned talk. You have said all of these things in the context of criticism of the President.

I will be honest, I don’t believe that Sen. Obama would actually attempt to appease terrorist groups. I’m hearing on talk radio today essentially that argument. I think that’s wrong. The reality is, however, that sen. Obama is terribly misinformed and does not understand the enemies this country faces in dealing with groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, and Syria. One would hope that if elected, Sen. Obama’s first encounter with these groups would be a didactic moment of low cost to the US and its allies. However, we can’t be assured of that fact. Thus, Republicans are right to stand up and yell “This is totally insane!” when people suggest that we should talk to terrorists.

By the way - the Senator who said, “If I could have only talked to Hitler, all of this could have been avoided.” It was Senator William Borah, a Republican Senator from Idaho. Thankfully - our party has learned from that mistake.
