Electoral Politics and a Suicide Pact?

dnclogo2008.jpg(Washington, D.C. - Right Commentary) Gallup came out today with some fascinating numbers about how democratic voters will react in the general election if “their candidate” is not elected the nominee. A sizable proportion of Democrats said that they would vote for John McCain next November if he is matched against the candidate they do not support for the Democratic nomination. This is particularly true for Hillary Clinton supporters, more than a quarter of whom currently say they would vote for McCain if Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee.

I strongly encourage reading the report - it provides a fascinating look.

This result tracks closely with another Poll done by Franklin and Marshall College of voters in Pennsylvania. In that poll, they found that among Obama supporters, 20 percent said they would vote for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee, if Clinton beats their candidate for the nomination. Among Clinton supporters, 19 percent said they would support McCain in November if Obama is the Democratic nominee.

I don’t know about you - but it sounds to me that either way, McCain stands to gain at the ballot box by the outcome of the Denver Convention. Perhaps picking Vice President Gore isn’t so crazy after all?
