Vanguard of the New American Conservatism.

When the legend becomes fact - print the legend.

hillary.gif(Washington, D.C. - RightCommentary.com) Apparently, while Vice President Al Gore was out inventing the internet - Senator (then First Lady) Hillary Clinton was dodging hot lead all in the name of maintaining troop morale for KFOR in Bosnia (that in and of itself is a difficult premise). Perhaps it is the YouTube generation
catching up with Sen. Clinton. Perhaps, in her mind, she does indeed remember landing like the Marines at Guadalcanal - when she flew to Bosnia in 1996. Perhaps, had she not been the first lady, we wouldn’t have all this video of her casually strolling the tarmac.

A good friend of mine, who was a prosecutor for a number of years, said this to me once, “You know what liars do? They lie.” Fair enough. So how then, can anyone, in good faith accept what Sen. Clinton said as a “mis-speak”. We’re faced with two very difficult to accept premises - either a) she’s a liar, in which case one has to decide whether a pathological liar is a good idea for President (although many claim President Clinton was also a pathological liar and thus unable to not lie about the Monica Lewinsky affair); b) she’s delusional - in which case I have to wonder if that’s even worse. At least a liar knows the truth - and avoids it. Delusional people can’t distinguish between fact and fiction.

I watch a fair amount of C-Span and I saw this speech where Sen. Clinton claimed she was landing in Bosnia - running under “sniper fire” with her daughter. I remember my ears perking up at the time and going “What? Say that again?” I mean - it seemed incredulous even then. I mean, I had to accept three things happened: one, Secret Service would intentionally allow a landing in a combat zone that was active; two, Hillary would decide, yes, I want to throw my only child to the wolves and have her meet death by having a 308 ventilate her skull; three, that the Army would even go along with all of this, even if one and two decided “Land this thing Bat 21!” Perhaps its because I’m an evil conservative - but even then - I was shocked by what on its face appeared to be such a boldface lie.

What she said was this:

“I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.”

And here is the video:

The Heroic Senator Clinton. I mean, as long as you’re making it up, she should have gone whole hog. I’d have killed a few members of the enemy while I was at it on the ride in - mock up some shots of First Lady Clinton working the .50 cal on the ride down to KFOR. Perhaps even a Rambo-knife scene where she single handedly saves an entire town in Bosnia. There could have been movies! Hillary’s back and, this time, its for REAL!It’s all too funny except for the fact she honestly believes she’s qualified to be President based on her experience as First Lady. And quite frankly, memories being what they are these days, absent the 24-7 super-big-brother of the Internet and YouTube, Sen. Clinton would have likely escaped criticism of what was a patently false statement. The comedian Sinbad, who was also on the 1996 trip with Senator Clinton but is supporting her rival Barack Obama in the presidential campaign, said the most worrying part of the trip was deciding where to go for dinner.

Senator Clinton makes this argument to the American people - I am ready to answer that phone call at 3AM because I was Bill’s right hand adviser. I was there with him when he made the tough calls - and I can evaluate the options and know how to work the system. Again, probably because I’m an evil conservative, even if I accept that argument on its face, en arguendo, I still shudder. President Clinton’s foreign policy was largely a disaster in my view, and thus, if she’s claiming credit for that, then I’m really concerned she’s delusional. But nevertheless, it is slowly and continuously coming to light that Sen. Clinton has made these claims as to her foreign policy experience based in large part on myths and lies of while she was First Lady. The recently released schedules show she was often little more than a dutiful spouse of the President. Moreover, people who attended as the principals at conferences and meetings where Senator Clinton claims to have brokered foreign policy victories for the Clinton Administration, have one word for it - bollocks.

I believe that Senator Clinton knows all to well that lies can become fact - she is working hard to craft this persona of Sen. Clinton - the myth, the woman, the legend - in hopes it can propel her to the Oval Office.

One of my favorite Movies - and obviously where the title of today’s posting comes from - is The Man who Shot Liberty Valance. In the film, Stoddard (Jimmy Stewart) confesses how he did not kill Liberty Valance (John Wayne’s character - Tom Doniphon - did), to the local newspaper editor, who refuses to publish it and burns the notes the reporter took. “When the legend becomes fact,” the editor says, “print the legend.” The movie ends with the now-aged Senator Stoddard and Hallie returning to Washington by train, both melancholy about the cost of the lie that has allowed them their great fortune together. Stoddard asks Hallie who put the cactus rose on Doniphon’s coffin and she responds, “I did.” Stoddard asks a conductor how long it will take to get to Washington. The conductor tells them that he will make the train do 25 the whole way and mentions at an upcoming junction they’ve called ahead to stop all other train traffic. Stoddard thanks him and the conductor says, “nothin’s too good for the man who shot Liberty Valance,” and walks away.

Nothin’s too good for the woman who braved sniper-fire with her daughter to rescue our troops from their doldrums of morale.

You know - now that I think about it - I’m pretty sure Sen. Clinton shot Liberty Valance too.
