A call to renew the NSA intercept authorization

This article just came across on the wires:
House agrees to rare secret session on spy bill
I sincerely hope that the Congress and the White House can reach a resolution soon. Although there is great interpretation in many circles about conducting “spying” in the United States, the reality is that our enemies reside within the United States and attempt to coordinate their activities with individuals in the United States.
The United States intelligence community has unparalleled capability to conduct technical spying - and obtaining timely information from targeted investigations on conversations (with appropriate oversight of course) would be invaluable in saving lives. Every day the program to spy on suspected al Qaeda operating in the United States is not functioning - we place American lives at risk. Unfortunately, it is that simple. Unlike wars of the past - ordinance is not the key to victory - information is the key to victory and thwarting attacks.
I do not support abandoning our laws in order to “save” us from harm. I do not encourage development of an ad hoc system to manage this type of wiretapping or intercepts. However, it is clear that the Washington bureaucracy must act, and act now, to resolve this political question and attempt to define the rules to allow us to place maximum force on the enemy. We are idling NSA resources because Congressional and electoral politics are taking the primary role, when we should all be mindful of the challenges to our national security, and the challenges of defeating violent groups like al Qaeda who are operating - as I write - within the United States. It is time to reach a deal with the White House and end the stalemate; free up the intelligence community to do what it does best - reveal what our enemies seek to conceal.
I encourage Congress to act expeditiously and pass a bill that all parties can agree to. While our enemies try to plot to kill us, Congress should not just sit idle while we have resources at hand that could be protecting Americans.
